Linux

If you really don't want to be tainted by the Windows blight, perhaps it's time to try Linux.

Linux Distros

  • Mint Linux: Probably the best I have tried -- less ugly than Ubuntu and less buggy than Debian, both of which are among the best
  • Xubuntu: Get Xubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) -- It's probably the most up-to-date and least buggy of all the "Ubuntus"
  • Debian Linux: Would be good if every release didn't have some bug that takes days to figure out. Once you get it working, it's excellent.
  • Of the display managers available, XFCE is the best, most reliable, and least prone to gimcracks, gadgets, widgets, and whatnot that just bog down your system. Avoid KDE.
